Guwahati : In a major breakthrough, Dispur Police have arrested a 32-year-old doctor from Bishnunagar, VIP Road, Guwahati, for allegedly masterminding a large-scale fraud involving forged government work orders for the supply of medical equipment. The scam is believed to have duped several individuals and businesses across Assam out of lakhs of rupees.
The accused, who had been absconding since August 2023, reportedly used his medical background to gain the trust of his victims and present a convincing façade. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by Md. Samim Ali, a resident of FA Ahmed Nagar, the doctor had promised a lucrative government supply contract and collected Rs 4 lakh under false pretences.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the accused had used similar tactics to defraud multiple victims, often channeling the ill-gotten money through his wife’s bank account to obscure the financial trail.
Dispur Police registered the case under Dispur PS Case No. 446/2025, invoking sections 61(2), 318(4), 336(3), and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The doctor was finally apprehended and subjected to a mandatory medical examination following arrest procedures.
Authorities have confirmed that multiple FIRs have been filed against the doctor in different police stations across Assam, indicating the widespread nature of the scam. Alarmingly, even fellow medical professionals were among those misled by the forged documentation, believing them to be authentic government work orders.
This arrest follows a series of similar fraud cases reported in Assam’s health sector. Earlier this year, Medical Dialogues reported the busting of a medical reimbursement scam involving a health department employee at the Khanapara State Dispensary, who allegedly forged signatures of state-level referral board members to claim reimbursements for fake medical bills.
Police have now launched efforts to uncover the full scope of the fraud, identify additional victims, and investigate the financial networks associated with the case.
