Mumbai: Patients at GT Hospital will soon benefit from an in-house 3-tesla MRI machine, eliminating the need to travel to JJ Hospital for scans. The new machine is expected to be operational within two months, easing the burden on JJ Hospital’s radiology department.
Background
- GT Hospital previously used a 1.5-tesla MRI machine, purchased in 2012, but it broke down in 2023.
- Since then, 20 to 25 patients daily—including referrals from St. George Hospital—had to rely on JJ Hospital for MRI scans.
New MRI Machine & Its Benefits
- The 3-tesla MRI machine, procured at a cost of ₹23.24 crore, will serve both GT and St. George Hospital patients.
- It will help in the detection of strokes, brain disorders, heart disease, and tumours.
- The machine will be inaugurated by Maharashtra’s Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif.
GT Hospital Dean, Dr. Jitendra Sankpal, expressed confidence that the machine will greatly improve patient care and reduce long waiting times for MRI scans.
