Student Picked Up from Undisclosed Location
Kanpur: A first-year MD (Cardiology) student from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College has been detained by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in connection with the ongoing investigation into the Delhi blast case. Officials said the student was taken into custody from an undisclosed location on Thursday.
Electronic Devices Seized for Forensic Examination
An ATS team searched the student’s rented accommodation in Ashok Nagar, seized his mobile phone and laptop, and took him to Delhi for questioning. Investigators said he may be confronted with other suspects already arrested in the case.
Came Under Scanner After Former Professor’s Arrest
Sources said the native of Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, came under suspicion after disclosures made during the interrogation of a former GSVM professor arrested earlier. Investigators believe he was in frequent contact with the accused doctor and her brother, both extensively questioned.
Phone Records Suggest Links with Suspects
Initial analysis reportedly indicates communication with the alleged mastermind and other suspects. Officials said the group used a shared e-mail ID to exchange draft messages — a tactic commonly used to evade surveillance. His recent trip to Jammu and Kashmir also raised red flags.
Attempt to Delete Data Before Detention
When ATS personnel reached his residence, he allegedly tried to delete data from his phone, but officers seized the device in time. The development has caused unease among doctors and students at GSVM Medical College, where he joined the Cardiology Department only three months ago.
Institute Initiates Screening of All Cardiology Students
Cardiology Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Gyanendra said the student worked quietly and lived off campus. After the detention, the institute has begun screening all first-, second- and third-year cardiology students as a precautionary measure.
Landlord Confirms Search Operation
The landlord said the student had been staying with another doctor for about a month. “Around 7.30 pm, a four-member team arrived with keys, searched his room, locked it and left silently,” he said, adding that he never noticed suspicious behaviour.
Police Verifying Details; More Arrests Likely
A senior police official confirmed the student was handed over to central agencies for further interrogation. Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said a verification process is underway. Meanwhile, ATS and NIA teams continue operations in Kanpur as officials indicate more names may emerge as the probe deepens.
