New Delhi: Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate medical care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling Competition at Thyagaraj Sports Complex, Nadda highlighted the need to address the unique healthcare challenges faced by individuals with IDD.
“People with IDD often struggle to access appropriate healthcare, resulting in poor health outcomes. To improve their care, healthcare professionals must be trained not only to address physical symptoms but also to meet the specific needs of individuals with IDD,” Nadda said.
He stressed the importance of training medical professionals in areas like understanding unique health concerns, effective communication using simplified language or assistive devices, and demonstrating empathy and commitment to special needs. He also acknowledged the critical role played by families, caregivers, and support organizations in advocating for individuals with IDD.
Nadda praised the efforts of Special Olympics and the Golisano Foundation in fostering inclusion and equitable healthcare systems.
The competition, running until November 22, marks a historic moment as India hosts the first-ever Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling event. Featuring 81 athletes from 12 nations, it also debuts Bowling as a competitive sport in India.
MP Naveen Jindal, speaking at the event, applauded the athletes, saying, “Today, we celebrate not just the competition but the perseverance and dedication of these young athletes. Their courage reminds us that true strength lies in overcoming challenges.”
