Panaji: In a bold statement at the inauguration of a medical camp in Mapusa, Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane declared that doctors unwilling to upgrade their knowledge or adopt new technologies would be removed from service.
Strict Measures for Better Healthcare
Rane announced that such “outdated” doctors at Goa Medical College (GMC) would be terminated within the next 15 to 20 days and replaced by professionals aligned with modern medical standards. “It’s time to show the door to those not ready to adapt. We need doctors who work in the interest of saving lives,” he asserted.
He also revealed plans to set up a new, advanced cardiothoracic unit at GMC to enhance critical care services in the state.
Senior Citizens and Cancer Care Initiatives
To support the elderly, Rane announced the launch of intensive health camps across Goa. Acknowledging the challenges faced by senior citizens dependent on their families for medical visits, he said these camps aim to make healthcare more accessible to them.
Rane also stated that cancer will soon become a notifiable disease in the state, meaning routine blood tests will include cancer marker screenings. This move is expected to boost early detection rates.
The first floor of the upcoming comprehensive cancer institute in Bambolim has been completed, with six more floors planned. “With this facility, Goans will no longer need to travel to Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital for cancer treatment,” he added.
Healthcare Infrastructure Upgrades
Further improvements include:
- Enhanced cardiology, neurology, and ICU services at the South Goa District Hospital
- Deployment of additional 108 and cardiac ambulances
- A centralized health services dashboard to be established in Panaji for better monitoring
- Introduction of minimally invasive skull-base surgery at GMC, eliminating the need for open skull procedures
Minister Rane’s statements reflect a strong push towards modernization and accountability in Goa’s public healthcare system, with promises of improved infrastructure, accessibility, and patient care.
