Panaji: A case has been registered against the in-charge of the central government-run ESI Hospital in Margao, Goa, for alleged negligence resulting in a patient’s death, police officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The action follows an order from the Judicial Magistrate First Class Court in Margao directing the police to file an offence against the accused, Dr. Vishwajit Desai.

According to the complaint filed by Suraj Sawant, a resident of Ponda city in South Goa, his mother passed away in February last year due to alleged negligence by Dr. Desai during a minor procedure for left-hand thumb arthritis.

Police sources stated that before initiating action, the case was reviewed by the medical board at Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.
