Srinagar: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has achieved a significant milestone by securing approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for two DM Neurology seats, marking the first-ever approval for DM seats in any medical specialty in Jammu and Kashmir. This approval is expected to elevate the super-specialization sector of medical education in the region.
Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah, the Principal of GMC Srinagar, expressed that the approval for DM Neurology represents a new era for medical education in J&K. She emphasized that the medical college had also applied for more DM courses, and further approvals were anticipated in the near future. “This is the era of super-specialization, and as a medical college with numerous specialty hospitals under its scope, we must continue to strive for excellence in expertise and patient care,” she said. She highlighted that this progress is made possible by ongoing advancements in academics, with all departments and faculty working diligently to improve the quality of education and care.
Additionally, GMC Srinagar is also focusing on enhancing the nursing sector. Prof. Iffat Shah mentioned that the introduction of MSc Nursing, aimed at improving nursing standards in the region and offering better career opportunities for youth, is a step towards further strengthening healthcare education. Furthermore, the Government College of Nursing, Dewan Bagh, under GMC Srinagar’s administration, has been allotted 80 seats in Post Basic Nursing for August 2024 and 25 seats in Nursing for September 2024 by the University of Kashmir.
This development underscores the growing focus on expanding healthcare education and super-specialization in Jammu and Kashmir, with GMC Srinagar leading the way in transforming the region’s medical landscape.
