Villupuram | In a breakthrough in the burglary case involving a government doctor’s residence in Pudu Pillayarkuppam near Panruti, police have arrested five suspects and recovered 93 sovereigns of melted gold jewellery.
The burglary occurred on July 25 at the home of a doctor serving at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital. Following the incident, Villupuram Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar constituted a special investigation team to trace the culprits.
The case was cracked on Sunday, August 3, during a routine vehicle check at Sathipattu on the Panruti-Kumbakonam Highway. Kadampuliyur police intercepted an SUV with five occupants and found melted gold ornaments equivalent to 93 sovereigns inside the vehicle.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Suresh (37), Dinesh Kumar (30), Jegadeesan (31), Murugan (52), and Ashok (33). Police investigations revealed that the group had broken into the house by forcing open the grill gate and subsequently melted the stolen jewellery in an attempt to sell it in Kumbakonam.
All five accused were produced before a local court and have been remanded in custody as further investigations are underway.
This case comes amid a series of recent thefts targeting doctors’ homes, raising concerns about security for healthcare professionals.
