Kozhikode : The police has registered an FIR under Section 366 (rash and negligent act to endanger human life) of the IPC against the doctor, B Shan, for performing a procedure on the wrong leg of the 60-year-old patient. Kerala health minister Veena George has also asked the district medical officer to conduct an enquire of the incident and submit the report. A preliminary report of the incidence by the district medical officer backs the patient medical allegations and has found serious lapses on the part of the doctors and the hospital.
The patient Sajina Sukumaran’s family said that the patient was admitted to the National Hospital in Kozhikode for a procedure to be conducted on the left leg. The left leg had got injured a year ago after it got stuck in a door and though the patient was treated for a year by doctors the pain did not subsidize. The patient was admitted to the National Hospital for surgery of left leg but after surgery the patient was shocked to see that her right leg was operated instead of the left leg. After the botched-up surgery the doctor and the hospital gave tame excuse that there was a block on the right leg and only after the right leg was cured they could perform the real surgery. Terming the explanation given by the doctors as an excuse to hide their fault the patient family has said that beside the police case they will approach the human right commission for compensation. Meanwhile a video of the internal inquiry in the hospital has surfaced in which the doctor was seen admitting his lapses and pleading for help.
