Family Protests After Alleged Medical Negligence

Amethi: A doctor at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Amethi has been accused of performing surgery while intoxicated, leading to the death of a patient. The incident sparked a protest by the victim’s family outside the hospital in the early hours of Thursday, prompting authorities to launch an inquiry.

Patient Admitted for Chest Pain, Dies After Surgery

Shivram Mishra, a resident of Mau village in Gauriganj, was admitted to the hospital at 4:30 PM on Wednesday after experiencing chest pain. According to his grandson, Suraj Kumar Mishra, the attending doctor, Dr. Sanjay Dwivedi, conducted tests and diagnosed an issue with the patient’s nerves. A team of doctors, including Dr. Satyendra Tiwari and Dr. Apoorva Mishra, then took him to the operation theatre, where the alleged negligence occurred.

“There were no proper arrangements. We saw staff running around for oxygen cylinders and gloves. Shouldn’t they have prepared everything beforehand? Dr. Sanjay Dwivedi was completely drunk,” the grandson alleged.

Doctor Flees, FIR Registered Against Four Medical Staff

As protests erupted, Dr. Dwivedi fled the hospital. Following a complaint by the victim’s son, the Munshiganj police registered an FIR against:

  • Dr. Sanjay Dwivedi (accused of being intoxicated while operating)
  • Dr. Satyendra Tiwari (negligence)
  • Dr. Apoorva Mishra (negligence)
  • Dr. Prashant Dwivedi (negligence)

Gauriganj Circle Officer Akhilesh Verma confirmed the FIR and stated that the body has been sent for a post-mortem while investigations continue.

Authorities Launch Investigation Amid Hospital’s Troubled Past

Amethi Chief Medical Officer Anshuman Singh has formed a three-member medical inquiry team to investigate the allegations. Additionally, Gauriganj Block Pramukh Umesh Pratap Singh, the brother of local MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh, reached the protest site to mediate.

Notably, Sanjay Gandhi Hospital had its license suspended in 2023 after a woman died from an alleged anesthesia overdose during gallstone treatment. That case also led to an FIR against three doctors, including the hospital’s CEO.
