
Coimbatore-Based Anaesthesiologist to Lead Global Alliance Advancing Emergency Medical Care
Coimbatore: Dr J. Balavenkatasubramanian, a senior consultant anaesthesiologist and academic director at Ganga Medical Centre and Hospital, has been appointed Chairman of the Acute Care Action Network (ACAN) under the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).
ACAN is a global alliance, supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), dedicated to improving outcomes in emergency and acute care settings worldwide. It aims to implement strategies aligned with the World Health Assembly’s Resolution WHA 76.2 to ensure access to high-quality acute care services across nations.
Strengthening Emergency Care Globally
Backed by key organizations such as the Laerdal Foundation and the American Heart Association, ACAN is focused on creating integrated emergency care pathways and policies. With Dr Balavenkatasubramanian at the helm, the network seeks to strengthen global collaboration in advancing emergency care systems.
Distinguished Career in Anaesthesiology
Dr Balavenkatasubramanian brings with him over three decades of experience in anaesthesiology. He is currently the national president of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, which represents nearly 50,000 medical professionals across India. Additionally, he serves as the secretary of WFSA, headquartered in London.
His global contributions include serving as the immediate past president of the Asian Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia and being a member of the WFSA Educational Committee since 2020.
Academic and Professional Accolades
An alumnus of Coimbatore Medical College (MBBS, 1988), Dr Balavenkatasubramanian holds a Diploma in Anaesthesia from B.J. Medical College, Pune (1990), and an MD in Anaesthesiology from PGI Chandigarh (1994). His work has earned him several prestigious awards, including:
