
Hyderabad: Renowned gastroenterologist and Chairman of AIG Hospitals, Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, has been conferred the prestigious ‘Legends of Endoscopy’ award in Japan, becoming the first Indian to receive this international honour. The award was presented during the Tokyo Live Global Endoscopy 2025 event organized by Showa University, Tokyo.
This recognition adds to an illustrious list of accolades earned by Dr. Reddy, including the Padma Shri (2002) and Padma Bhushan (2016), for his groundbreaking contributions to gastroenterology and medical science innovation.
A Life of Medical Breakthroughs
Dr. Reddy is widely acknowledged for his pioneering work in endoscopic procedures, particularly the development of the Nagi-stent, a life-saving innovation in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. At the event, Dr. Haruhiro Ino, Chairman of Showa University Digestive Diseases Center, praised Dr. Reddy for his life-saving contributions and tireless dedication to the field.
“Dr. Nageshwar Reddy has saved countless lives through his innovations, particularly through the development of the Nagi-stent,” said Dr. Ino.
From Kurnool to Global Recognition
A graduate of Kurnool Medical College, Dr. Reddy is the founder of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Hyderabad, which is today regarded as the world’s largest gastroenterology hospital. His contributions have earned him international recognition:
- Rudolf V Schindler Award by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
- World Endoscopy Organization Lifetime Achievement Award (2021)
- Highest Gastroenterology Honor in Shanghai (2013)
Dr. Reddy is also an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and a key figure in shaping modern endoscopy techniques globally.
