
Renowned Surgeon Takes Charge
Padma Shri awardee and world-renowned orthopaedic and spine surgeon, Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, has been appointed as the new President of AIIMS Guwahati. The appointment was confirmed by a government notification issued on August 18.
Strengthening Healthcare in Northeast
AIIMS Guwahati is one of the 19 premier AIIMS institutions established under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat Mission. Dr. Sanjay’s nomination aims to strengthen healthcare, medical education, and research in the northeastern states.
Distinguished Medical Career
Born on August 31, 1956, in Saidnagar, Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Sanjay completed his MBBS from GSBM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1980. He went on to work at prestigious institutions like PGI Chandigarh and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. With international fellowships from Japan, the USA, Russia, Australia, and Sweden, he has authored acclaimed research papers and delivered lectures worldwide.
Global Recognition and Records
Dr. Sanjay’s pioneering surgical work has earned him entries in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records. In 2005, he set a world record by removing the largest bone tumour. His achievements have been recognised globally, making him one of India’s most celebrated surgeons.
Awards and Leadership
Apart from the Padma Shri, Dr. Sanjay has received numerous honours, including Uttarakhand Ratna, Uttaranchal Gaurav, Scott Foundation France Award, National Healthcare Excellence Award, and Six Sigma Healthcare Excellence Award. He also served as the founding president of the Uttarakhand branch of the Indian Orthopaedic Association and continues to actively contribute to national and international medical organisations.
