Eminent Cardiologist to Lead Medical Education in Uttarakhand
Dehradun: Dr Bhanu Duggal has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University (HNBUME), Dehradun. Currently serving as Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at AIIMS Rishikesh, she brings with her vast experience in clinical medicine, academics, research, and healthcare administration.
Appointment Issued by Governor and Chancellor
The appointment has been issued by the Governor and Chancellor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.). As per the official order, Dr Duggal will serve a term of five years from the date she assumes charge, or until she attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier, subject to the pleasure of the Chancellor.
Strong Academic and Administrative Background
Dr Duggal has held several key academic and administrative roles during her career. Prior to her current position at AIIMS Rishikesh, she served as Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai.
Experience at Leading Cardiac Institutions
She has also worked at the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre in New Delhi, one of the country’s premier cardiac care institutions. Her clinical expertise and leadership in cardiology have earned her recognition both nationally and internationally.
Noted for Research in Interventional Cardiology
An internationally recognised cardiologist, Dr Duggal is particularly known for her research on the clinical use of stents in India. Her contributions to evidence-based cardiac interventions have significantly strengthened interventional cardiology practices in the country.
Recognitions and Fellowship Achievements
Among her accolades is the Diversity Travel Support Award received in April 2013. She has also secured prestigious fellowships, including the ICMR International Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States and the DBT Early Career Clinical Fellowship under the Indo-UK programme.
Academic Qualifications from Premier Institutes
Dr Duggal completed her MBBS and MD in Medicine from AIIMS, New Delhi. She later pursued her DM in Cardiology from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, further strengthening her credentials in advanced cardiac care.
Leadership Role in Health Technology Assessment
In addition to her clinical and academic work, Dr Duggal served as the Head of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Resource Centre for Uttarakhand at AIIMS Rishikesh. Her appointment as Vice-Chancellor is expected to enhance the quality of medical education and research across affiliated institutions in the state.
