Veteran nephrologist and academician from Assam to represent Northeast in apex medical council
Guwahati: In a significant recognition of his decades-long contribution to medical education and healthcare, Dr. Anup Kumar Barman has been appointed as a part-time member of the National Medical Commission (NMC) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Dr. Barman currently serves as the Director of Medical Education, Training, and Research in Assam and is the President of the Assam Council of Medical Registration.
His appointment is being seen as a key step toward enhancing representation from the Northeast in national medical policymaking and education reforms.
A senior administrator and renowned nephrologist, Dr. Barman has also been serving on key medical bodies, including the Medical and Health Recruitment Board, Assam, and the Board of Directors of the Assam Medical Services Corporation Ltd. He is already a state-nominated member of the Medical Advisory Council (MAC) of the NMC, New Delhi.
Extensive Academic and Clinical Background
Dr. Barman completed his MBBS in 1988 from Assam Medical College under Dibrugarh University and MD in Internal Medicine in 1993 from Gauhati Medical College. He later earned his DM in Nephrology from AIIMS, New Delhi, in 1997. His global training includes a fellowship from the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (Manchester, UK) and postdoctoral work in renal transplantation at Columbia University, New York.
In academia, Dr. Barman has held positions from Registrar to Professor and Head of the Department of Nephrology at Gauhati Medical College, where he played a foundational role in launching the DM Nephrology course. He also founded the Guwahati Nephrology Forum, promoting knowledge sharing and clinical excellence in the region.
Contributions and Recognition
An active voice in the national and international medical community, Dr. Barman has served as an invited speaker at numerous conferences and contributed to leading journals. He was a member of the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Nephrology (2015–2018) and has 18 indexed publications—14 national and 4 international.
