Incident linked to personal enmity; victim sustains serious head injuries
Vadakara (Kerala) – In yet another disturbing case of violence against medical professionals, a doctor was brutally attacked by a six-member gang while on duty at a healthcare facility in Maniyoor near Vadakara. Police have registered a case against four identified assailants, while investigations are underway to trace the remaining gang members.
The incident occurred on July 8, when the gang forcibly entered the hospital premises and assaulted the doctor, leaving him with serious head injuries. The injured doctor, Dr Gopi Krishnan, was admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, and a case was filed based on his complaint, police told The Hindu.
Personal Enmity Suspected
Preliminary investigation suggests that the attack may have stemmed from personal rivalry, though further details are yet to be confirmed. Authorities said the gang’s premeditated entry into the hospital and the targeted nature of the assault point toward a motive beyond spontaneous aggression.
A case has been formally registered, and the police are continuing their probe to ensure the remaining culprits are brought to justice, as reported by Manorama Online.
Rising Threats to Medical Personnel
This incident has added to the growing list of violent attacks on healthcare professionals across the country, sparking renewed demands for better security and stricter enforcement of protective laws.
As previously reported by Medical Dialogues, a third-year MD Medicine student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College was recently attacked by a patient’s husband following a dispute over a medical procedure. In that case, the accused was arrested under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Kerala Healthcare Services Persons and Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2012.
Healthcare workers’ associations have repeatedly urged authorities to take swift and firm action to ensure hospitals remain safe working environments, especially amid rising cases of aggression against medical personnel.
