Doctor Arrested After Patient Alleges Inappropriate Touching, Later Released on Bail
New Delhi: A resident doctor from the Orthopaedics Department of a government hospital in Burari was arrested on charges of sexually harassing a 21-year-old patient who had visited the hospital for treatment of a lump on her chest. The doctor was later granted bail, police confirmed.
According to the woman’s complaint, the accused doctor initially touched her inappropriately under the pretext of a medical examination. She further alleged that on another occasion, while waiting for the lift, the doctor touched her chest and other parts of her body and initiated inappropriate conversations, including requests for her contact number and address.
As per reports by HT Media, the incident occurred on Tuesday when the woman visited the hospital with her mother, concerned about a lump she had noticed in her chest over the past two weeks. Initially examined by a female doctor in the presence of two male doctors, the accused entered the room without permission and began inappropriate touching, claiming it was part of the medical examination.
Later, the accused allegedly sent her to the hospital basement for an X-ray, which was closed for the day. She told police that the doctor followed her downstairs, offering to examine her in the dimly lit basement. Feeling unsafe, she refused and proceeded toward the lift. The doctor reportedly continued pursuing her, asked for personal details, and touched her inappropriately again before she managed to escape by taking the lift.
Following the ordeal, the woman filed a complaint under Sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Burari police station. Within hours, the police issued a notice and arrested the accused doctor, who is originally from Patna and has been serving on a contract basis at Burari Government Hospital for three years.
The magistrate’s court later granted him bail.
