New Delhi, April 28, 2026 — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced approval for a comprehensive and long-term redevelopment study of the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) campus, aiming to transform it into a modern, integrated healthcare and academic hub.

137-Acre Healthcare Ecosystem to Be Revamped

The sprawling 137-acre campus houses several key institutions, including Lok Nayak Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Centre, and the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences.

Officials noted that the campus operates as an interconnected ecosystem, making integrated and planned redevelopment essential for improving healthcare delivery and academic infrastructure.

Three-Phase Redevelopment Strategy

The project will be executed in three key phases:

Phase 1: Master Planning
A detailed master plan will be prepared for the entire campus, ensuring compliance with norms of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and other statutory regulations. The plan will incorporate a vision for the next 30 years, focusing on future expansion and infrastructure needs.

Phase 2: Structural Audit and Design
Existing buildings will undergo structural audits and technical evaluations. Based on findings, modern layouts, designs, and redevelopment proposals for new infrastructure will be developed.

Phase 3: Tendering and Execution Support
All tender-related documentation will be prepared, along with technical assistance to ensure smooth and timely execution of redevelopment works.

Focus on Modern, Efficient Infrastructure

According to officials, the redevelopment will integrate supporting infrastructure to create a well-organised, efficient, and technologically advanced medical campus aligned with global healthcare standards.

Push for Medical Education Expansion

The move comes amid broader efforts to strengthen medical education in the capital. Recently, Delhi University approved new super-speciality courses, including DM programmes in paediatric nephrology and medical genetics, at affiliated institutions such as Lady Hardinge Medical College and MAMC.

Long-Term Vision for Healthcare in Delhi

The redevelopment of the MAMC campus is expected to significantly enhance patient care capacity, research capabilities, and academic excellence, positioning it as a future-ready medical hub for Delhi and beyond.
