Mohali: A week after a 63-year-old patient died following knee replacement surgery at Grecian Hospital, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been informed that a committee has been constituted to investigate the allegations of medical negligence.
Four-Member Expert Panel to Lead Inquiry
The inquiry will be conducted by a four-member expert committee formed by the Mohali Civil Surgeon. The panel will be headed by Dr Anupam Mahajan, Head of Orthopaedics at AIIMS Mohali, and will include Dr Amit Pal, Dr Harpreet, and Dr Anamika Soni. The investigation will take place at District Hospital/AIIMS Mohali, and the committee has been asked to submit its report within a week.
Complaint Filed by Son of Deceased Patient
The action follows a complaint filed by the deceased patient’s son, Dr Abhishek Dhiman, a Delhi-based doctor. Through his counsel, he stated that his father had undergone all required preoperative tests before the knee replacement surgery on March 5, 2025, raising questions about the cause of complications that followed.
Sequence of Medical Complications Detailed
According to the complaint, the patient suffered a cardiac arrest at around 5 a.m. in the recovery room shortly after the surgery. He was then shifted to the ICU for further care. However, on March 10, the patient suffered a second cardiac arrest and passed away, leading the family to allege negligence by the treating doctors.
High Court Seeks Expert Findings
The matter was presented before Justice Suvir Sehgal, who adjourned the hearing to December 17, granting the expert committee time to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its comments before the next hearing.
Tribune Report Highlights Allegations
As per reports from The Tribune, the complainant alleges that despite proper preoperative evaluations, lapses occurred during or after surgery that contributed to the patient’s death. The investigation aims to determine whether the medical team followed standard care protocols.
Similar Negligence Cases Under Scrutiny
This case comes at a time when Pune’s liver transplant deaths are also under investigation, with probes reportedly stalled due to a shortage of specialists. These incidents have raised wider concerns about accountability in complex medical procedures across major hospitals.
Earlier FIR Filed in Chandigarh Negligence Case
Medical Dialogues had previously reported another alleged negligence case in which Chandigarh Police registered an FIR against the owner of Santokh Hospital and two doctors nearly five years after a 51-year-old patient died following complications from gallbladder surgery. The growing number of such cases has intensified debates around medical accountability and patient safety.
