Mohali: A violent clash between two rival groups late Friday night turned Derabassi’s Civil Hospital into a battleground, leaving at least 11 people injured and causing panic among medical staff, patients, and their families. The incident has triggered a doctors’ strike and raised serious concerns about hospital security.
Mining Dispute Escalates into Hospital Violence
The altercation reportedly began in Mukundpur village, linked to a mining dispute involving the son of a local Congress leader who allegedly sided with one group. After three injured individuals were brought to Derabassi Civil Hospital, the rival factions resumed their fight on hospital grounds.
Videos of the bloody clash quickly went viral, showing miscreants using medical equipment and fire extinguishers as weapons. Hospital staff were forced to lock themselves inside rooms while terrified patients and attendants fled for safety.
Hospital Services Disrupted, Multiple Injuries Reported
The brawl resulted in significant disruption of medical services, with damaged equipment and shattered infrastructure. The Derabassi police intervened promptly, arresting seven individuals on the spot while others involved were undergoing treatment.
Of the injured, four were admitted to GMCH-32, three to Mohali Civil Hospital, and four remained at Derabassi Civil Hospital.
Doctors Protest, Demand Security
In response to the violence, doctors and hospital staff went on strike Saturday morning, staging a dharna to demand better security. Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek visited the site, assuring the staff of 24/7 police protection and a thorough investigation.
Government Vows Strict Action
Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh condemned the violence, calling hospitals peace zones where no political influence would shield offenders. He emphasized that violence against medical staff and vandalism of hospital property are non-bailable offences and ordered strict action against all responsible, regardless of affiliation.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation, recording witness statements and analyzing CCTV footage from both the hospital and the village. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at both locations to prevent further disturbances.
The incident has reignited debate on the safety of healthcare workers and the need for stringent laws to protect hospitals from violence, especially during emergencies.
