Health authorities in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district have taken strict action against Christanand Hospital following allegations of severe infections after cataract surgeries that reportedly led to significant vision loss in at least three patients.

Action Taken After Preliminary Inquiry

The decision to suspend the hospital’s registration and seal key facilities was taken by Civil Surgeon Dr Mahadev Chinchole on Monday. Authorities sealed the operation theatre and inpatient department after a preliminary investigation revealed serious lapses.

Violations of Medical Norms and Regulations

According to officials, the inquiry found violations of the Bombay Nursing Homes Act, 1949 along with non-compliance in ophthalmic care standards. The hospital was allegedly conducting eye surgeries without authorized ophthalmology beds and failed to meet mandatory safety norms.

Outpatient Services to Continue Temporarily

While surgical and inpatient services have been suspended until further notice, authorities have allowed the outpatient department (OPD) to continue functioning on a temporary basis to avoid disruption for existing patients.

Timeline of Surgeries and Complaints

The affected cataract surgeries were reportedly conducted on February 19, while formal complaints regarding post-surgery complications were received on March 16. The delay in reporting raised further concerns, prompting a detailed investigation.

Case Referred for Higher-Level Probe

The matter has now been escalated to the State Health Department, which is expected to initiate a high-level inquiry based on the final report of the committee.

Growing Concerns Over Patient Safety

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about patient safety and adherence to medical standards in smaller healthcare facilities. Similar cases in other states have previously resulted in strict administrative action, including licence cancellations, following severe post-surgical complications.
