Leh, May 1 — In a landmark move for the Union Territory of Ladakh, the Government of India has granted ‘in-principle’ approval for the establishment of a new medical college at Spituk Pharka and the expansion of Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital in Leh. The combined project, valued at Rs 785.61 crore, marks a significant leap forward in both healthcare infrastructure and medical education for the region.
The proposal, submitted by the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh (UTL), received clearance from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, pending final appraisal by the Public Investment Board (PIB) and incorporation of required observations.
A Game-Changer for Ladakh
The new facility will include:
- A full-fledged academic block for medical education,
- Comprehensive infrastructure upgrades to SNM Hospital, aimed at boosting its tertiary care capabilities.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson, called the development “transformative” and noted it would significantly improve both access to quality healthcare and local opportunities for aspiring doctors. “This project will empower our youth and reduce dependence on hospitals outside Ladakh,” he said.
Public Optimism and Local Impact
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm across the region.
- Rigzin Dolma, a school teacher from Choglamsar, said: “Our children dream of becoming doctors, but financial constraints prevent them from studying outside. This college will change that.”
- Norboo Stanzin, a shopkeeper in Leh Bazaar, highlighted the strain of long-distance referrals: “Upgrading SNM Hospital is crucial. We’ve waited long for this.”
Gratitude to the Centre
CEC Gyalson extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Finance Ministry, and Health Minister J.P. Nadda, calling it a testament to their “visionary leadership and commitment to Ladakh’s aspirations.”
Looking Ahead
Once operational, the dual project is expected to:
- Reduce medical migration to cities like Srinagar and Delhi,
- Promote self-reliance in Ladakh’s healthcare system,
- Boost medical education and employment opportunities for local youth.
The project is widely seen as a milestone in Ladakh’s developmental journey and a step toward equitable healthcare access in remote regions of India.
