Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has urged the Sealdah Court to award the death penalty to Sanjoy Roy, the prime accused in the rape and murder case of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI described the crime as “heinous” and falling under the “rarest of rare” category, justifying the demand for capital punishment.
The crime shocked the nation when the body of the trainee doctor was discovered on August 9. Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested within 24 hours based on CCTV evidence. The case was later handed over to the CBI by court order.
Developments in the Case:
- Prime Accused: The CBI identified Sanjoy Roy as the main perpetrator and filed a chargesheet against him. He is currently lodged in the Presidency Correctional Home.
- Other Arrests:
- Abhijit Mondal, the then Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tala police station, was accused of evidence tampering but was released on bail after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet.
- Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, was accused of complicity in the crime and evidence destruction. While Ghosh has been granted bail in this case, he remains in judicial custody for a separate corruption case related to the hospital.
Allegations of a Larger Conspiracy:
Junior doctors at the hospital alleged that Sandeep Ghosh had links with Roy and accused him of masterminding the crime. They also claimed that more individuals were involved in the case. However, the CBI has not arrested anyone else so far, despite interrogating several suspects.
Legal Proceedings:
The CBI submitted that the brutal nature of the crime and its impact on society necessitate the harshest punishment. The court will now deliberate on the submissions and deliver its verdict in the coming weeks.
This case has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for justice for the victim and accountability for all those involved. The verdict will be closely watched as it sets a precedent for crimes of this magnitude.
