Tirunelveli : A female attendant has alleged that an orthopedician has sexually harassed her under the influence of alcohol in Thisayanvilai. Meanwhile, the family of the complainant has demanded that the accused be arrested and called the police “biased” for allegedly refusing to file an FIR.   

According to the complaint lodged by the victim, who recently got married, the accused allegedly misbehaved with her on the pretext of examining her father at Jerry Hospital. At around 7.15 PM, I took my father to Jerry Hospital for a checkup. The accused asked me to wait. At 9 PM, I went to the doctor’s room and requested him to treat my father, citing the delay. He brought me and my father to another room. He made my father lie on a bed and approached me and said he would treat my father in exchange for sexual favours. He forced me to sit beside him and locked the door. Panicked by this, I rushed out of the room,” read the complaint.

Shortly after, she said, the doctor chased her father out of the room when he confronted the accused.

“The police should take action against him to ensure the safety of other women,” she said. The father of the complainant said that the nurses at the reception apologised to him, and defended the doctor’s actions by saying that he was in an inebriated state.

The father and daughter approached the Thisayanvilai police the next day. “My daughter and I had to wait at the station from 10 am to 7 pm. The police registered a CSR (community service register) based on her complaint but refused to file an FIR. Some police personnel said that an FIR had been registered, but we were denied a copy. If the police do not arrest the doctor, we will stage a protest,” said the father. When contacted, Superintendent of Police N Silambarasan confirmed to TNIE that an FIR was registered against the doctor, and added that further investigation into the matter is on.

Namakkal : The health minister of Tamil Nadu M Subramanian informed that a government gynecologist and a tout have been arrested in Namakkal district for selling seven newborn babies across Tamil Nadu to childless couples from those couples who had more than two children. The arrests of the government gynecologist and broker Logambal were carried out on Sunday by Namakkal police who were acting upon directives from District Collector Dr. Uma, who had received information about the criminal activities in Tiruchengode. According to Health Minister M Subramanian, Logambal had reportedly been engaged in the illegal trade of babies for over a decade.

Subramanian explained that the modus operandi of the accused involved coercing financially disadvantaged women, particularly those who had already given birth to two children and were delivering a third, into selling their newborns. Male infants were allegedly sold for Rs 5,000, while female babies were purportedly sold for Rs 3,000. “It’s not a case where babies are being stolen and sold but where the poverty of the couple is taken advantage of to convince them to part with their third newborn,” Subramanian said. “This violates the law. There are several steps to be taken to register and legally put-up children for adoption. But, none of this was done. They have done this solely for money. The gynecologist has been an accomplice because of whom they managed to sell several babies.”

To further investigate the matter, a committee consisting of senior police officials and health department representatives has been formed to determine whether this illegal activity was confined to the Tiruchengode government hospital or extended to other locations. Additionally, it has come to the officials’ notice that the accused may be involved in an illegal kidney racket.

The gynecologist has been suspended from her services following her arrest, and the health department plans to take further departmental actions against her. Minister Subramanian emphasized that those implicated in these activities will not go unpunished, and both legal and departmental actions will be initiated against them.

Bengaluru : An FIR was registered against Sanjeevini Hospital doctor and staff after a three-year-old girl was administered expired medicine by the hospital staff. According to the FIR, staff at Sanjeevini Hospital administered expired medicine named multiple electrolytes and dextrose. A nurse at the hospital administered a medicine which had expired two months ago to the girl. The girl’s parents staged a protest in front of the hospital after she allegedly suffered rashes in her mouth because of the side effects of expired medicine. Meanwhile, the hospital has reportedly suspended a nurse and a pharmacist and the same has been communicated to the police. A case of adulteration of drugs (IPC 274), sale of adulterated drugs (IPC 275), and causing hurt by the act of endangering the life of others (IPC 337) has been registered against the hospital.

New Delhi: A 34-year-old doctor in the capital’s Harsh Vihar area not only allegedly sexually assaulted a 34-year-old nurse but also recorded her nude videos and extorted Rs 7 lakh from her. The accused was apprehended from Faizabad in UP. Based on her complaint, a case under IPC sections 376 (punishment for rape), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) was registered at Nand Nagri police station.

Srinagar :Jammu and Kashmir administration on Thursday terminated two doctors for allegedly actively working with Pakistan. The two doctors, Dr Bilal Ahmad Dalal and Dr Nighat Shaheen Chilloo, were fired from the service for hatching a conspiracy with its assets within Kashmir to fabricate evidence in the 2009 “Shopian rape” case. Notably, two women, Asiya Jan and Neelofar, were found dead in a stream in Shopian on May 30, 2009, leading to allegations that they were raped and murdered by security personnel.

Thane: A doctor was arrested for allegedly raping a 23-year-old mentally challenged woman at his clinic in Maharashtra’s Thane district. The incident took place at the doctor’s clinic in Badlapur west area. The victim had stepped out of her house to buy some essentials at a shop near the doctor’s clinic, when he allegedly lured her into the premises and raped her. When the woman did not return home, her family members went looking for her in the locality and found her footwear outside the doctor’s clinic, he said.

The family members entered the clinic and caught the doctor in the act and alerted the police. Based on the complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, a case under section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered against the doctor.

Patna : Mohammad Shamim Farooqui, an MBBS graduate from Kathmandu in Nepal, a resident doctor in the emergency ward of a leading Patna Hospital has been sacked and is facing a litancy of charges, including forgery to gain employment.  The Patna Hospital Paras HMRI Hospital has filed an FIR against Farooqui on charges of forgery, cheating, criminal misconduct and others.

Farooqui is accused of flunking a vital test required of Indian foreign graduates to practice in India. But it is being alleged that he produced fake documents and got himself register with the Bihar Council of Medical Registration(BCMR) which enable him to become eligible for the hospital job. Farooqui alleged forging came to light when he came under the scrutiny of CBI which has been investigating at least 73 foreign medical graduates qualification and eligibility to practice in India.

Warangal : In a joint operation by the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Health Department officials, and the Kakatiya University Campus (KUC) police the Warangal police busted an illegal prenatal sex determination and abortion racket which has performed 100 plus illegal abortions. The crackdown resulted in the arrest of 18 person which include five gynecologists and two ayurveda doctors. The gang, which included private and government doctors, was engaged in the unlawful termination of female fetuses across various locations in the Warangal district, reportedly in collaboration with certain hospitals. According to the Commissioner of Police, AV Ranganath, the arrested individuals have been charged under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT) of 1994 and other relevant legislation. During the operation, authorities seized sex-determination scanning machines, 18 cellphones, and Rs 73,000 in cash from the accused.

The prime accused of the racket is Vemula Praveen, and his wife, Sandhyarani who were found to be operating a clandestine scanning center in Narsampet town. Praveen had previously faced apprehension by the Hanamkonda police on similar charges while working as a technician at another scanning center. Despite this, he continued to engage in illegal activities. Investigations unveiled Praveen’s extensive network, which included liaisons with private and public hospital management, registered medical practitioners (RMPs), private medical practitioners (PMPs), as well as other medical personnel in Narsampet, Nekkonda, Hanamkonda, Warangal, and surrounding areas. Illegal abortions were reportedly conducted at four private hospitals within the district.

Further inquiry revealed that even Ayurvedic doctors were involved in performing abortions. The accused and their agents had expanded their operations to rural regions, utilizing portable devices for sex determination tests. The police estimate that the gang may have executed more than 100 illegal abortions. Each abortion reportedly carried a price tag ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000. Notably, the police successfully infiltrated the gang by deploying a woman sub-inspector under the guise of seeking an abortion, which ultimately aided in their operation to dismantle the racket.

Chandigarh : Rakha Singh Lakha the private assistant of Dr. Asish Kumar posted at Civil Hospital Mansa was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for demanding a bribe of Rs 3, 500 from the complainant Hardeep Singh for conducting surgery of his wife. On the basis of this enquiry the police has arrested the accused Rakha Singh Lakha and registered a bribery case against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act at VB Police Station, Bathinda range and the role of concerned doctor is being  investigated said the police.

Mohali : Dr. Surinder Pal Singh Bedi, the clinical director of Indus International hospital, Dera Bassi has been booked in the alleged illegal kidney transplant case. Dr. Bedi is the chairperson of the transplant aujtorization board. In the last two years the board headed by Dr.Bedi has cleared 33 cases of organ transplants at the hospital. Though Dr. Bedi and the hospital management have denied of any wrong doing in the whole case.
