Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday stayed the suspension of seven medical students from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) accused of promoting a “threat culture.”
Justice Jay Sengupta overruled the decision made by the college governing body and council, permitting the students to attend classes and take their semester exams.
The students had challenged their six-month suspension in the High Court, claiming it restricted their academic progress.
Senior counsel for the petitioners, Kalyan Bandyopadhyay, argued that the “threat culture” complaint was akin to a ragging allegation. He highlighted that NBMCH had not established the mandatory anti-ragging committee as required by the National Medical Council, nor had it consulted the parents of the accused before making the decision.
In response, NBMCH counsel Suman Sengupta defended the suspension, asserting that it was based on findings from a duly formed inquiry committee.
