Rajkot: A first-year postgraduate student from the ophthalmology department of Bhavnagar Government Medical College is in critical condition after allegedly attempting suicide by consuming an overdose of medicines in a hotel room in Palitana.
The Incident
The medico was discovered unconscious with froth coming from his mouth. Hotel staff grew suspicious after he failed to check out on time and entered his room, where they found him in distress. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to Bhavnagar Medical College and Hospital for emergency care.
Suicide Note Found
Police recovered a handwritten note from the hotel room containing emotional sentiments addressed to his parents. In the note, he expressed gratitude for their sacrifices in making him a doctor and conveyed his deep love for them.
Official Statement
Dr. Chinmay Shah, Dean of Bhavnagar Medical College, confirmed that the student’s condition remains critical and that his parents have been informed.
Police Action
Police have registered the case as a medico-legal case (MLC) and launched a preliminary investigation into the suspected overdose.
Background
The incident occurred on Tuesday after the doctor had completed his duty and checked into the hotel.
This case follows a similar recent incident where a third-year paediatrics PG medico allegedly attempted suicide by consuming Lorazepam tablets. In that case, colleagues alleged that the doctor was facing harassment and discrimination from her head of department, who was also her PG guide and local guardian.
The repeated instances have once again highlighted concerns over the stressful working conditions and toxic culture faced by young doctors in medical institutions.
