Dog Allegedly Thrown from Third Floor of Apartment Building
Bengaluru: A Bengaluru-based neurosurgeon has been booked for animal cruelty after allegedly killing a stray dog by throwing it from the third floor of his apartment building in Adugodi on April 22. The police filed an FIR following a complaint by Ayush Bhattacharjee, a student and fellow resident of the Brindavan apartment complex in Lakkasandra.
The doctor has been charged under Section 325 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with mischief by killing, poisoning, or rendering an animal useless.
Stray Dog Cared for by Residents
Reports indicate that the doctor had expressed dissatisfaction over the presence of the stray dog, Scooby, which was cared for by other residents. The first incident reportedly took place in February 2025, when Scooby was allegedly thrown from the third floor. The injured dog, suffering from spinal cord damage, was treated at a hospital for two months before returning to the care of the residents.
Second Incident Leads to Dog’s Death
On April 20, residents heard a loud noise and found that Scooby had fallen onto a parked car, damaging its windshield. While some residents confronted the doctor, others rushed Scooby to a hospital, where the dog succumbed to its injuries. Meanwhile, the car owner filed a separate complaint against the doctor for property damage.
Past Allegations Surface
Further investigation revealed previous allegations against the doctor. In 2022, while pursuing his postgraduate studies in surgery in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, he was implicated in the death of another stray dog. CCTV footage allegedly showed him grabbing a dog by the neck. However, the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed the FIR in 2024, citing lack of concrete evidence.
Police Initiate Further Action
The Adugodi police have registered the FIR and announced plans to summon the doctor for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation.
