Family alleges medical negligence and wrong procedure; protests erupt outside private hospital in Uttar Pradesh
Ballia: In a suspected case of medical negligence in Ballia, a 24-year-old woman died during a kidney stone surgery at a private hospital, leading to the registration of a murder case against five doctors, police said on Monday.
Death During Surgery Triggers Outrage
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Kotwali area of Ballia city. The deceased, identified as Anisha Rai from Devkali village under the Sukhpura police station limits, was undergoing treatment for kidney stones when she allegedly died due to excessive bleeding during the procedure.
Family Protests, Demands Strict Action
Following the woman’s death, her family members staged a protest outside the hospital, accusing doctors of negligence and demanding immediate legal action. The situation escalated as relatives created a ruckus and called for the hospital to be sealed.
Senior officials, including Additional District Magistrate Anil Kumar and Additional Superintendent of Police Kripa Shankar, reached the spot and pacified the protesters after assuring strict action against those responsible.
FIR Filed Under Murder Charges
Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased’s husband, Shivanshu Rai, police registered a case against five doctors under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to murder.
According to the FIR, the complainant alleged that:
- His wife was admitted around 2 pm on Sunday for a kidney stone operation
- The hospital charged Rs 1 lakh for the procedure
- Doctors had promised a laser-based surgery but instead performed a major abdominal operation
- The change in procedure allegedly led to excessive bleeding and her death
Attempt to Shift Patient Raises Suspicion
The FIR further claimed that after the woman’s condition worsened, hospital staff advised the family to immediately shift her to Lucknow, allegedly in an attempt to conceal the incident.
Investigation Underway
Station House Officer Kshitij Tripathi confirmed that efforts are ongoing to arrest the accused doctors. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is in progress.
