In a significant push to healthcare infrastructure, Government Medical College & Associated Hospital has witnessed major improvements under the flagship Ayushman Bharat initiative, enhancing patient care and medical services in the region.

Infrastructure and Services Strengthened Under Ayushman Bharat

Medical Superintendent Dr Shamim Ahmed Choudhary highlighted that the scheme has led to a notable increase in surgeries and deliveries at the hospital.

He stated that several infrastructure upgrades are underway, including the proposal and ongoing work for a dedicated power feeder to ensure uninterrupted services. Additionally, the hospital is expanding its specialist workforce and faculty strength to meet growing patient demands.

Focus on Maternal Care and Dialysis Services

As part of the upgrade, a dedicated floor has been acquired for the gynaecology department, aiming to improve maternal healthcare services. The hospital is also catering to a rising number of dialysis patients, reflecting an expansion in critical care facilities.

Authorities emphasized their continued focus on enhancing overall healthcare delivery and patient services in the region.

Understanding the Ayushman Bharat Scheme

Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is the world’s largest public healthcare programme. It provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per eligible family annually, benefiting over 12 crore vulnerable households across India.

Key Pillars Supporting India’s Healthcare Vision

Apart from AB-PMJAY, the broader Ayushman Bharat initiative includes multiple pillars aimed at strengthening healthcare access and infrastructure:

  • Ayushman Aarogya Mandir: Ensures primary healthcare services are accessible near people’s homes.
  • Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: Connects healthcare facilities through a unified digital infrastructure.
  • PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission: Focuses on building robust healthcare systems from village centres to district hospitals.

Improving Healthcare Access in Remote Regions

The upgrades at GMC Rajouri reflect the government’s push to strengthen healthcare services in remote and underserved regions like Jammu and Kashmir. With improved infrastructure, increased staffing, and better technology integration, the hospital is now better equipped to serve a larger population.

The development marks a step forward in making quality healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient for residents in the region.
