New Delhi: The Ministry of Ayush has underscored the vital role of traditional Indian systems of medicine — Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy — in offering holistic, preventive, and rehabilitative care for stroke, one of India’s leading causes of death and disability.
Emphasising an integrative healthcare model, the Ministry stated that Ayush systems focus on systemic balance, resilience enhancement, and long-term recovery, complementing conventional medical treatment in stroke management.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Prataprao Jadhav said,
“The growing challenge of stroke underscores the need for comprehensive, integrative health strategies. Ayush systems, with their emphasis on preventive care and long-term rehabilitation, can significantly complement conventional stroke management.”
He added that the Ministry remains committed to evidence-based traditional healthcare, aimed at improving quality of life and reducing the national burden of stroke through research collaborations and public awareness initiatives.
Advancing Research and Collaboration
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, highlighted the Ministry’s efforts in strengthening scientific validation and translational research across its institutional network.
“Ayush systems collectively offer a holistic framework for managing complex neurological disorders such as stroke,” he said.
“We continue to expand research that validates Ayush-based interventions, supporting integrative healthcare for stroke prevention, rehabilitation, and neurological well-being.”
Holistic Stroke Management
The Ministry explained that Ayush systems emphasise harmony between body, mind, and environment, focusing on preventive philosophy and therapeutic regimens that enhance resilience, reduce recurrence, and improve life quality.
In Ayurveda, stroke — often associated with Vata dosha imbalance — is managed through therapies aimed at restoring circulation, nerve function, and vitality, using detoxifying and restorative practices.
Studies have also shown that Homeopathy can serve as an effective adjuvant therapy for improving neurological outcomes, motor recovery, and post-stroke quality of life.
Understanding Stroke
A stroke, commonly called a “brain attack,” occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked (ischemic stroke) or a vessel ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA), or “mini-stroke,” results from a temporary blockage lasting a few minutes.
Toward Integrative Healthcare
The Ministry of Ayush reaffirmed that its traditional systems offer distinctive, complementary approaches for stroke prevention, management, and rehabilitation, helping patients achieve both physical and neurological recovery.
