Fake Dentists Operating Clinics for 10 Years Nabbed; Total of Eight Quacks Caught in Cachar District
Silchar: Following the Assam government’s intensified crackdown on illegal medical practices, two more fake doctors have been arrested in Silchar, raising the total number of quacks apprehended in Cachar district to eight in the last fortnight.
According to recent reports, just days after a fake doctor was arrested from Silchar Medical College and Hospital, the Cachar police stepped up efforts against unqualified medical practitioners. This time, they arrested two fake dentists who had been operating clinics in the Tarapur area of Silchar for the past ten years.
The arrests took place in Borkhola and Jirighat after police received tip-offs and complaints about medical fraud. Both individuals were allegedly treating patients using forged MBBS certificates. One was caught at a pharmacy in Borkhola, actively posing as a licensed medical practitioner, with fake documents recovered—including a bogus MBBS degree allegedly from a Bengaluru medical college. The second accused was arrested in Jirighat, where he had been practicing medicine for a significant period using forged credentials.
A senior police officer told TOI that preliminary investigations pointed to the involvement of two Silchar-based agencies supplying fake medical degrees. “The probe is ongoing to expose the full network. So far, we have arrested eight fake doctors across the district,” he said, emphasizing that the crackdown will continue, labeling such practices a “serious threat to public health and safety.”
In a separate development, police arrested another fake doctor late Monday night at a private hospital in Ghungoor. The accused had been practicing as a specialist doctor after obtaining a forged MD certificate from a hospital in Kaziranga. “We are investigating how he managed to operate at a private facility despite the fake documents,” police told Tripura Times.
