Dr. Mridupaban Nath Accused of Amassing Crores in Unexplained Wealth; Singer Kakoli Pathak Also Under Scanner
Guwahati: In a high-profile crackdown on corruption in the medical sector, the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell has filed a 1,497-page charge sheet against Dr. Mridupaban Nath, Associate Professor at Diphu Medical College, and Rimpy Baruah after an intense 52-day probe into financial irregularities and document forgery.
The detailed charge sheet, submitted to a competent court, alleges that Dr. Nath failed to account for ₹12.50 crore in assets. Investigators found that his wealth exceeded his known income by 185%, pointing to massive accumulation of disproportionate assets.
Forgery, Unexplained Wealth, and Private Hospital Ties
The case began when Dr. Rupam Mahanta, owner of JNSM Hospital, lodged a complaint accusing Nath of forging his signature on documents submitted to the CM’s Vigilance Cell. Nath was arrested by Mangaldoi Police and placed under judicial custody.
Subsequent raids at his residence led to the seizure of ₹8–9 lakh in cash, requiring a bank-grade cash-counting machine for verification. Investigators also uncovered links between Nath and financial stakes in multiple private hospitals, intensifying suspicions of systemic abuse of his official position.
The Assam Medical Council has suspended Dr. Nath’s registration for six months and instructed him to surrender all related documents within a week.
Allegations of Bigamy and Blackmail
Amid the widening investigation, allegations of bigamy surfaced, with Dr. Nath’s first wife accusing him of remarrying without a legal divorce.
In a sensational twist, popular Assamese singer Kakoli Pathak was also detained by the CM Vigilance Cell. She allegedly blackmailed Dr. Nath after he refused to marry her post-divorce, extracting ₹1 crore, a flat in Guwahati, and a car in exchange for dropping a police case. Authorities are now probing if she received further undue benefits.
Previous Suspension and Public Fallout
Dr. Nath had previously faced suspension for negligence at Diphu Medical College. The case has triggered widespread public debate over accountability in the healthcare system and raised serious concerns about ethical lapses within both medical and administrative circles in Assam.
With multiple legal threads emerging, the CM Vigilance Cell continues its investigation, which could lead to further arrests and institutional scrutiny.
