Ahmedabad: In a major enforcement action, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed nine private hospitals across the city for operating without Building Usage (BU) permission and failing to regularise their construction as mandated under state regulations.
Hospitals Ignored Repeated Notices From AMC
According to officials, the civic body had recently issued formal notices to these hospitals after discovering they were functioning without occupancy clearance. Despite these written and verbal reminders, hospital owners did not submit any proof of having obtained BU permission or regularised their buildings under the Gujarat Regularisation of Unauthorised Development Act (GRUDA).
Locations of Sealed Hospitals
As per AMC’s release, nine hospitals were shut down across five localities:
- South Bopal: 4 hospitals
- Juhapura: 2 hospitals
- Maktampura: 2 hospitals
- Sarkhej: 1 hospital
Officials stated that these facilities continued patient operations despite lacking the essential safety clearances, posing potential risk to the public.
AMC Extends Crackdown to Other Establishments
AMC further announced that similar action will soon be taken against multiplexes, schools, colleges, and other establishments running without BU permission or those failing to obtain clearance under GRUDA. The civic body has intensified inspections across Ahmedabad to ensure compliance.
Recent Health Sector Violations Raise Concern
Earlier, AMC had flagged violations related to human trials, referring cases to the Gujarat FDCA. In another disturbing incident reported by Medical Dialogues, a 29-year-old woman died during an illegal kidney removal procedure at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting broader concerns over compliance and safety within private medical establishments nationwide.
