Nagpur: AIIMS Nagpur recently achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing a complex lung surgery on a 26-year-old MBBS student diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the chest wall. The young patient, who hails from Bhopal, chose AIIMS Nagpur for its specialized care.
The surgery, led by Dr. Neelesh Shrivastava, assistant professor of surgical oncology, involved a right pneumonectomy, the complete removal of the diseased lung. The multidisciplinary team included Dr. Jaykumar (surgical oncology), Dr. Hemant Bawankar (CTVS), Dr. Shubhada Khanapure (surgical oncology), and Dr. Gajanan Chavan (anaesthesiology).
Dr. Prashant Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, expressed pride in the successful surgery, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to providing world-class care.
Synovial cell sarcoma, typically found near the limbs’ joints, was a rare occurrence in this case, presenting in the chest wall. The surgery was challenging due to the tumor’s proximity to vital organs, making precision and post-operative care crucial.
The patient experienced initial complications due to sepsis, but under intensive care, recovery proceeded smoothly. Dr. Shrivastava praised the success of the intervention, highlighting the importance of timely and coordinated medical action.
