Teen Undergoes Successful Removal of Parasitic Twin Limbs
New Delhi: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, successfully operated on a 17-year-old boy born with four legs. The teenager had two additional feet attached to his stomach due to a rare condition known as incomplete parasitic twins.
One in a Crore Condition Successfully Treated
Dr. Asuri Krishna, Additional Professor in the AIIMS Surgery Department, stated that this rare condition occurs in approximately one in one crore births. It results from the incomplete development of one twin, whose organs fuse with the surviving twin’s body. Globally, only 42 such cases have been reported.
Surgery Restores Normal Life for Teen
The boy, a resident of Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, was brought to AIIMS’ outpatient department on January 28. Doctors observed that his stomach was covered with a cloth, concealing two extra legs hanging beneath. These undeveloped limbs hindered his physical growth and posed risks to his internal organs.
The condition also led to severe mental distress, as the boy faced ridicule from society. Forced to drop out of school in Class 8, he struggled with both physical and emotional challenges.
The successful surgery not only ensured his healthy development but also gave him a chance to lead a normal life.
