AIIMS Centre of excellence & Wadhwani AI join hands to lead AI in healthcare

New Delhi: In a major boost to harness artificial intelligence for healthcare innovation, with the goal of improving diagnostics and care for millions across the country Wadhwani AI has partnered with AIIMS New Delhi as part of its recognition as an AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the Government of India. Wadhwani AI has played a central role in developing a range of AI-powered solutions, including those for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, pulmonary conditions, and skin diseases. These cutting-edge technologies are set to be scaled across India’s healthcare system, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The initiative will bring AI-driven diagnostics to both primary and secondary healthcare facilities, helping ensure more timely and accurate care for patients.

One of the flagship AI solutions developed by Wadhwani AI focuses on diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of preventable blindness in India. This condition often goes undetected, particularly in rural areas where access to specialised eye care is limited. Wadhwani AI’s technology empowers optometrists and field investigators to screen patients for DR in its early stages, significantly improving the chances of early intervention. Patients identified with potential issues can then be referred to specialists at AIIMS or other tertiary care centres for further treatment.

Wadhwani AI has also developed AI models to assist in interpreting chest X-rays (CXRs), which are crucial for detecting a wide range of pulmonary conditions. As CXRs account for nearly 40 per cent of all medical imaging scans, this AI technology is designed to serve as an additional diagnostic tool, helping radiologists prioritise urgent cases and enhance diagnostic accuracy. The collaboration with AIIMS Delhi aims to expand this technology to address multiple pulmonological conditions, improving patient outcomes through faster and more accurate diagnoses.
