Historic Milestone Achieved
Ahmedabad: The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC-ITS) at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has made history by completing 500 kidney transplants in 2025, becoming the only public sector hospital in India to reach this landmark in a single year.
Leading Public Hospital in Kidney Transplants
Operating under the guidance of the Gujarat government’s Health Department, IKDRC-ITS has reinforced its position as the country’s premier government-run kidney transplant centre. The institute’s achievements have earned it the top rank among public hospitals nationally in kidney transplantation.
Year-on-Year Progress
Official data shows that IKDRC had completed around 400 transplants by November 2024. In 2025 alone, the hospital reached 400 transplants by October 7 and ended the year with 500—a record in public healthcare. Among the recipients, 367 were men and 133 were women.
Services Extend Beyond Gujarat
IKDRC’s services benefit patients nationwide, with 330 recipients from Gujarat and 170 from other states availing treatment. This demonstrates the hospital’s growing reputation as a hub for complex and advanced kidney transplant procedures.
Specialised and Advanced Procedures
The 2025 tally included 157 cadaver transplants, 90 swap transplants, 49 paediatric transplants, and 43 robotic kidney transplants. These procedures highlight the institute’s expertise in combining modern techniques with highly skilled medical teams.
Affordable Healthcare for Vulnerable Groups
IKDRC has played a crucial role in providing equitable healthcare. Of the 500 transplants, 318 were conducted under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) scheme, while others were performed under the School Health Programme, and for SC, ST, CAPF, and CGHS beneficiaries.
Round-the-Clock Operations
A key factor behind IKDRC’s success is its 24×7 service model. The institute remains fully operational throughout the year, including major festivals such as Diwali, ensuring uninterrupted access to life-saving care.
Government Support and Vision
With sustained support from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat Health Department, IKDRC-ITS has established itself as a national benchmark for public healthcare excellence, blending advanced medical technology with humanitarian service for economically weaker patients.
