Victim’s family accuses doctor of harassment under the pretext of marriage; case registered and investigation underway
Adilabad:
A doctor from the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad was arrested on Tuesday evening on charges of sexually harassing a woman in the Echoda mandal area. The accused, a 45-year-old resident of Echoda, allegedly harassed the woman for over four months, claiming he intended to marry her.
The matter came to light after the victim’s father, identified as Rehman, lodged a formal complaint with the local police. In his statement, Rehman said the doctor, Dr. Asim, repeatedly made public statements about marrying his daughter against her wishes, which not only caused emotional distress to her but also hampered the family’s efforts to seek a matrimonial alliance.
According to reports in Telangana Today, the father also alleged that the doctor had been stalking his daughter over the last two weeks, further escalating the family’s concern for her safety.
Police Action and Investigation
Following the complaint, local law enforcement acted promptly and took Dr. Asim into custody. A case has been formally registered, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the full scope of the allegations and evidence.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over workplace and professional misconduct involving healthcare professionals across India.
Similar Incidents Raise Alarm
In a separate but equally troubling case reported earlier, a 25-year-old female dentist in Tamil Nadu was allegedly assaulted by a male colleague after she repeatedly rejected his marriage proposals. The victim, who had recently started working at a private dental clinic near Hosur, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the Hosur Government Hospital.
The accused, who also works as a duty doctor at another hospital, allegedly attacked her inside the clinic. Police have launched a parallel investigation in that case as well.
Growing Concern Over Gender-Based Harassment in Healthcare
These cases have sparked widespread concern over gender-based harassment and abuse in the medical profession, with calls for stricter screening, sensitisation training, and swift disciplinary action against erring professionals.
