RANCHI — In a historic development for medical education in Jharkhand, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, has received official approval from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to commence Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) courses. This approval marks RIMS as the first government-run institution in the state to offer postgraduate dental education, effectively filling a decade-long void in Jharkhand’s specialized medical training infrastructure.
A New Chapter for Aspirants
The Dental Education Section of the Ministry has sanctioned a total of 27 seats distributed across nine different specialisations at the RIMS Dental Institute. These courses are set to begin from the 2026-27 academic session, providing a significant opportunity for NEET MDS aspirants who previously had no government options within the state.
For years, students graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in Jharkhand faced a critical hurdle. While the state offers approximately 500 BDS seats across various colleges, the total lack of government MDS programs forced meritorious students to either migrate to other states for higher studies or seek admission in expensive private institutions.
Strengthening Specialist Healthcare
Beyond the academic benefits, the introduction of MDS courses is expected to revolutionize patient care at RIMS. Medical Superintendent Hirendra Birua noted that the presence of postgraduate students will significantly enhance the institute’s ability to provide advanced oral treatments and specialized clinical training.
The nine approved branches of specialities include:
- Oral Medicine & Radiology
- Prosthodontics & Implantology
- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
- Conservative & Endodontics
- Periodontics
- Public Health Dentistry
- Oral Pathology & Microbiology
- Forensic Odontology
- Orthodontics.
Rigorous Standards and Compliance
The approval follows years of intensive effort by the RIMS administration to upgrade its infrastructure, faculty strength, and clinical facilities to meet the stringent norms of the Dental Council of India (DCI). According to RIMS PRO Shishir Kumar, the move is a vital step in strengthening the state’s premier medical institution.
The Ministry has granted the approval initially for one academic year, with subsequent renewals being subject to annual compliance with DCI standards. This ensures that the quality of education and clinical practice remains at par with national benchmarks.
Community and Regional Impact
This development is being viewed as a cornerstone for “RIMS Vision 2026,” an initiative aimed at transforming the hospital into a world-class healthcare hub. By retaining local talent and fostering a new generation of dental specialists, Jharkhand is poised to reduce its dependency on external medical resources while providing residents with access to affordable, high-end dental procedures.
As the admission process for the first batch of 27 students nears, the RIMS Dental Institute is preparing to integrate its new postgraduate wings into its existing multi-specialty framework, heralding a new era of excellence for Eastern India’s dental sector.
