New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed the removal of deepfake videos circulating on social media that falsely feature Medanta Hospital’s trademark and its chairman, Dr. Naresh Trehan.
The court observed that the videos were created to mislead the public by promoting unapproved medicines, using Dr. Trehan’s likeness and Medanta’s logo without authorization. Justice Mini Pushkarna granted an interim injunction, stating that the deceptive content could cause irreparable harm to the hospital’s reputation.
The plaintiffs argued that the videos falsely portrayed Dr. Trehan endorsing treatments for urological conditions, which is not his area of expertise. The court emphasized the malicious intent behind the videos and ordered their immediate removal.
This marks a critical step in combating the misuse of deepfake technology for fraudulent purposes.
