Kolkata: The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJDF) announced its decision to move the Calcutta High Court after the Kolkata Police denied permission to hold a sit-in protest at Doreena Crossing from December 17. The demonstration was aimed at urging the CBI to submit a supplementary charge sheet in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case.
The police, in their communication, cited potential traffic disruptions during the festive season as the reason for refusal. “The proposed programme could lead to traffic congestion and inconvenience to the general public, especially during Christmas and New Year celebrations,” the police stated, adding that similar protests in the past had caused significant commuter delays.
WBJDF’s Response
WBJDF official Dr. Rajiv Pandey expressed disappointment, saying, “We are moving the Calcutta High Court to seek permission for a peaceful protest.” The group had initially planned to demonstrate from December 17 to December 26 at the central Kolkata location.
The organization had also marched to the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Saturday, demanding progress in the case.
Parents of the Deceased Demand Justice
The mother of the victim, a young medic whose semi-nude body was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital on August 9, criticized the CBI for failing to file a charge sheet even after months of investigation. She expressed her frustration, stating, “We provided the CBI with all the information we gathered about that night. Yet, justice seems as distant as ever.”
The case, which involves allegations of rape and murder, initially led to the arrests of former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and ex-Tala police station OC Abhijit Mondal. However, both were granted bail on December 13 after the CBI failed to submit a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrest.
Background of the Case
The incident shook the medical community when the on-duty medic’s body was discovered under suspicious circumstances. The case was initially probed by the local police before being handed over to the CBI. Despite months of investigation, the lack of significant progress has left the victim’s family and medical professionals disheartened.
The court’s decision on the WBJDF’s plea will determine whether the medics can resume their peaceful protest, as they continue to seek justice for their deceased colleague.
