Mumbai: The authorities of the Corporation run V N Desai Municipal General Hospital of Vile Parle have urged the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to cancel the registration of contractual doctors who had allegedly not responded to the show cause notice issued by the hospital for abandoning patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and trauma intensive care unit (TICU) for hours to celebrate a birthday. The contractual doctors were from Jeevan Jyot Charitable Trust. It was alleged that Dr. Chetan Rathod and Dr. Mander Muley, provided by Jeevan Jyot Charitable Trust to V N Desai Municipal General Hospital were on contract left seven ICU patients to their fate for hours. It was alleged that one doctor went to Dr R.N Cooper Hospital to celebrate a birthday and the other disappeared. Nurses at the hospital made a note about the missing doctors in their diary at 3.40 am. The staff also alleged that these doctors keep leaving the hospital premises as they were practising at both places simultaneously.
Taking cognizance of the serious lapse the hospital issued a show cause notice to both doctors demanding an explanation within two days, failing which it would be recommended to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) to cancel their registration. The doctors allegedly didn’t bother to respond and the hospital asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Chief Medical Superintendent and the Trust to seek an explanation from both doctors. The doctors didn’t turn up for the same. It is on record that doctors were absent from TICU/ MICU on September 16, and one had left even before the reliever doctor came.
Senior officials from the hospital said they had made several complaints about such doctors provided by private firms and have now written to the DMC and the Maharashtra Medical Council was taking strict action against such doctors and revoking their licence.
