A one-day-old baby girl allegedly abducted from Daga Hospital in Nagpur was safely recovered after an intensive citywide search operation lasting around eight hours. Police traced the newborn to Yashodhara Nagar and reunited her with her parents, while the investigation into the alleged abduction continues.

Newborn Taken From Hospital

The newborn was under the care of her grandmother, 50-year-old Meena Hadatkar, when a burqa-clad woman allegedly approached her inside the hospital. According to police, the woman claimed that the family could receive benefits under a government scheme and offered assistance with the registration process.

The woman allegedly collected the family’s Aadhaar details and mobile number before accompanying the grandmother, who was carrying the baby, towards another ward. She reportedly told the grandmother that the infant needed to be taken inside for a thumb impression and biometric verification.

The woman then allegedly took the newborn and did not return. After realising that she was missing, the grandmother searched the hospital and alerted the authorities.

Police Launch Citywide Search

The Tehsil police registered a case and launched an investigation following the complaint. Senior police officers, including Zonal DCP Rahul Madne and Senior Inspector Sanjay Mendhe, reached the hospital as police teams began searching for the infant.

Investigators examined CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas. Although several cameras were reportedly not functioning, available footage showed a burqa-clad woman entering the hospital at around 11:35 am and leaving approximately an hour later. The infant was not visible in the available footage.

Police subsequently expanded the search to several parts of the city. CCTV footage from areas including Mominpura and Yashodhara Nagar was examined, while teams from the anti-trafficking cell also participated in the operation. CCTV checks reportedly covered around 250 localities.

Newborn Recovered From Yashodhara Nagar

The breakthrough came after photographs and information about the missing newborn were circulated on WhatsApp. According to police, members of the accused woman’s family recognised her from the information being circulated and alerted the authorities.

Police subsequently reached her location in Yashodhara Nagar and recovered the infant. The newborn was later reunited with her parents at Yashodhara Nagar police station.

Police said the accused had allegedly taken the newborn after the death of her own baby and was preparing to take the infant to Aurangabad. During the operation, she reportedly sustained serious injuries after jumping from a moving autorickshaw and was taken to Mayo Hospital.

Senior Police Inspector Yunus Chand Shaikh confirmed the recovery of the baby. The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction.
