Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav Orders Strict Action Against Government Doctors Missing Duty for Up to Four Years
In a major disciplinary action aimed at strengthening public healthcare services, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has announced the permanent dismissal of 43 Civil Assistant Surgeons (CAS) who remained absent from duty at government hospitals across the state without authorization for prolonged periods.
According to the Health Department, several of the doctors had reportedly stayed away from their assigned posts for as long as four years. Despite being served show-cause notices and formal charges, the doctors failed to provide satisfactory responses, prompting the government to initiate termination proceedings.
The minister emphasized that the state government would not tolerate negligence that adversely affects patient care and public healthcare delivery. He stated that medical professionals entrusted with public service responsibilities must remain accountable and adhere to service rules.
Second Major Crackdown on Absentee Doctors in Andhra Pradesh
The latest action follows a similar disciplinary drive undertaken by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) last month, during which 51 doctors working in government teaching hospitals were dismissed for prolonged unauthorized absence from duty.
Officials said the ongoing disciplinary proceedings involve specialists from multiple departments, including General Medicine, Orthopaedics, and Gynaecology. Departmental records revealed that a total of 118 government doctors were found absent without authorization. Under existing state service regulations, government employees can face termination if they remain absent for more than one year without official approval.
Resignations and Departmental Inquiries Underway
Apart from the 43 doctors facing dismissal, 34 doctors submitted their resignations after receiving show-cause notices and charge memos. The government is expected to accept 15 resignations, while the remaining 19 cases will undergo detailed scrutiny under the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1991.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the government has appointed 11 district-level inquiry officers to examine the conduct of the concerned doctors and submit reports.
Explanations, Rejoining Cases Under Review
Director of Secondary Health Chakradhar Babu clarified that further action would depend on the explanations submitted by the doctors and the findings of the inquiry officers. Officials noted that 19 doctors attributed their prolonged absence to personal reasons, which will be verified through the inquiry process.
Meanwhile, nine doctors have already reported back for duty, while the cases of 13 others are currently under government review.
Government Reinforces Accountability in Public Healthcare
The Andhra Pradesh government’s latest crackdown highlights its efforts to improve accountability within the public health system and ensure uninterrupted medical services in government hospitals. The action is expected to send a strong message against unauthorized absenteeism among healthcare professionals and reinforce discipline within the state’s healthcare workforce.
