War against branded medicine

Amritsar: Within a week of banning prescription having branded medicine to the patient in government hospital in Uttar Pradesh, the State government of Punjab has warned its doctor against prescribing branded medicine in government hospital. Similar directions have been issued in several states across the country. The directions was issued by the State government of Punjab after several complaints came alleging that patients were being forced to buy expensive medicines prescribed by doctors.

“Doctors should write name of the salt instead of writing the brand name of drugs,” directed the Health Minister. Such directions from the State should be read in continuation with the directions issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in the recently released Draft Ethics Regulations 2022.
