Staff Nurse to Be Called ‘Nursing Officer’, Nursing Sister Renamed ‘Senior Nursing Officer’
The Government of Chhattisgarh has announced the renaming of key posts in the nursing cadre across state-run health institutions as part of efforts to modernise and strengthen the healthcare system.
The announcement was made by Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal during a programme organised on the occasion of International Nurses Day on Tuesday.
Under the revised designation system, the post of Staff Nurse will now be known as “Nursing Officer,” while the designation of “Nursing Sister” has been changed to “Senior Nursing Officer.”
Health Minister Praises Nurses for Their Service and Dedication
Addressing the gathering, Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said nurses form the backbone of the healthcare system and remain closely associated with patients throughout treatment and recovery.
He stated that the profession reflects compassion, dedication and selfless service, often performed under challenging conditions. The minister also highlighted the crucial contribution of nursing staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Jaiswal, nurses continued to serve patients despite health risks and demanding working environments, standing at the forefront during one of the most difficult phases faced by the healthcare sector.
‘Nurses Care for Patients Like Family Members’
The Health Minister further remarked that nurses often look after patients with the same concern and emotional support as family members. He said their role in medical services deserves greater recognition, dignity and respect.
Jaiswal also thanked Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and stated that the state government is continuously working towards improving healthcare infrastructure, administrative systems and long-pending facilities in the sector.
Nursing Officers Honoured During International Nurses Day Event
During the programme, several nursing professionals were recognised for their contribution to healthcare services in the state. Those honoured included Reena Rajput, Neelima Sharma, Ranjana Singh Thakur, Suman Dewangan, Komeshwari Navrange, Pragati Satpute, Sheetal Soni and Namita Daniel.
Recently, Droupadi Murmu conferred the National Florence Nightingale Awards for the year 2026 on 15 nursing professionals at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The awardees were recognised for their exceptional contribution to public healthcare delivery, community welfare and dedicated nursing service across different regions of the country.
