Pune’s public healthcare system is set for a major boost as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to upgrade 11 municipal health centres into fully equipped general hospitals. The move aims to address rising healthcare demands in the rapidly expanding city.
Focus on Expanding Healthcare Infrastructure
With Pune witnessing steady population growth, the PMC has taken this step to strengthen its healthcare network. The selected centres will be transformed into modern facilities with improved infrastructure, advanced medical equipment, and enhanced patient care services within the next six months.
₹90 Crore Budget to Drive the Upgrade
A budget allocation of ₹90 crore has been earmarked for the project. The announcement was made by Standing Committee Chairman Srinath Bhimale during the civic budget presentation, underlining the administration’s commitment to upgrading public health facilities.
Hospitals Identified for Transformation
Under the general hospital category, five major centres have been shortlisted:
- Rajiv Gandhi Hospital Yerawada
- Laigude Hospital Vadgaon
- Sanjay Gandhi Hospital Bopodi
- Dalvi Hospital Shivajinagar
- Malti Kachi Hospital Gadikhana
Additionally, six maternity facilities will be upgraded:
- Sonawane Maternity Hospital Bhavani Peth
- Rajmata Jijau Nursing Home Pune
- Dhankawadi Hospital Pune
- Shivarkar Hospital Wanawadi
- Sutar Hospital Kothrud
- Skhedekar Hospital Bopodi
Joint Inspection and Detailed Planning
A joint inspection will be conducted by PMC’s Building and Electrical Departments to assess the current condition of these centres. Based on the findings, a comprehensive upgrade plan will be prepared, covering infrastructure, electrical systems, staffing, and installation of modern medical equipment.
Improving Access for Middle and Lower-Income Groups
The initiative is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare for economically weaker and middle-class residents who largely depend on municipal services. Currently, Kamala Nehru Hospital Pune remains the only major general hospital run by PMC.
Existing Challenges in Municipal Healthcare
At present, PMC operates 54 outpatient departments (OPDs) and 19 maternity homes, catering to around 11,000–12,000 patients daily. However, several facilities face issues such as inadequate infrastructure, staff shortages, and administrative delays—challenges that this upgrade project aims to resolve.
A Step Towards Stronger Urban Healthcare
The planned upgrades mark a significant step toward strengthening Pune’s public healthcare ecosystem, ensuring better preparedness and improved medical services for the city’s growing population.
