Patient Claims He Was Given Expired and Incorrect Medication for Skin Condition
A serious allegation of medical negligence has surfaced at the Udala Sub-Divisional Hospital, where a patient has claimed he was provided expired ear drops instead of the prescribed medication for a skin condition, sparking concerns over hospital pharmacy practices.
Incident Reported by Khaladi Village Resident
The incident involves a resident of Khaladi village under Udala police limits, who visited the hospital after experiencing severe itching and developing skin sores. Following a consultation, he was prescribed medication for treatment.
However, the situation took a troubling turn later that night when the patient reportedly checked the medicine and found that it had already expired in 2025. Alarmed by the discovery, he immediately informed his family.
Allegation of Wrong Medicine Dispensed
In addition to the expiry concern, the patient has alleged that the medicine provided was not even intended for his condition. According to him, instead of a skin treatment lotion, he was given ear drops with a similar composition.
Speaking to media, the complainant said that after realizing the issue, the family decided to return to the hospital. However, they were allegedly told by hospital authorities that the disputed medicine was never issued by them.
Hospital Denies Claims
The Sub-Divisional Medical Officer has rejected the allegations, stating that the medicine in question was not listed in the official prescription. He further maintained that the hospital pharmacy did not dispense the expired drug, distancing the institution from the claims made by the patient.
Rising Concerns Over Drug Safety in Public Hospitals
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about drug safety and accountability in public healthcare facilities. Ensuring proper stock management, timely disposal of expired medicines, and accurate dispensing practices remain critical to patient safety.
Background: Focus on Preventing Use of Expired Medical Supplies
The issue gains significance in light of recent directives aimed at tightening medical supply monitoring. Following earlier incidents involving alleged use of expired saline, authorities had emphasized regular stock audits in hospitals to prevent such lapses.
Call for Investigation
While the truth behind the Udala hospital case remains contested, the allegations underline the need for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and restore public trust in healthcare services.
