
Senior Gastroenterologist Takes Charge
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appointed Padma Shri awardee Prof. Dr. Radha Krishna Dhiman as the new Chairman of AIIMS Patna. He is currently serving as the Director of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, and the Kalyan Singh Superspecialty Cancer Institute, Lucknow.
Dual Role at AIIMS Patna
Along with his chairmanship, Dr. Dhiman has also been appointed as a permanent member of the Institute Body of AIIMS Patna. This will enable him to play a crucial role in strengthening the administration and governance of the institute.
Architect of the Punjab Model
Dr. Dhiman is credited with implementing the cost-effective Punjab model for hepatitis C treatment at the public health level. The success of this model led to the launch of the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program (NVHCP) in 2018, which now provides free diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis through the National Health Mission.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
An alumnus of King George Medical College, Lucknow, Dr. Dhiman completed his MBBS in 1984, MD in Medicine in 1987, and DM in Gastroenterology from SGPGI in 1991. He has earned fellowships from the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases, the Royal College of Physicians (London and Edinburgh), and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
Awards and Contributions
Dr. Dhiman was awarded the Padma Shri in 2024 by President Droupadi Murmu and the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in 2008 by then President Pratibha Patil. He has also received the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Award four times.
Leadership During Covid-19
He played a significant role in managing the Covid-19 crisis in Uttar Pradesh, serving as Chairman of the UP State Advisory Boards on Covid Management and Covid-Associated Mucormycosis (CAM). His leadership and expertise contributed to strengthening the state’s response to the pandemic.
