Patients Appreciate Affordable Treatment, While Activists Demand Rollback
Hubballi: The Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMC-RI), Hubballi, has increased its service charges by 5% to 100%, effective March 3. Despite the hike, many patients and their families welcomed the revision, citing that the costs remain affordable compared to private hospitals.
As per the revised charges:
- OPD registration has increased from Rs 10 to Rs 20.
- IPD registration now costs Rs 50 instead of Rs 30.
- Scanning fees have risen from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000.
Patients Defend the Fee Hike
Several patients supported the increase, sharing how KMC-RI offers ethical and affordable treatment compared to private hospitals.
- Vikas Soppin, a farmer activist, shared his experience:
“Doctors at KMC-RI assured me there was nothing to worry about regarding my health. My family insisted on a second opinion at a private hospital in Dharwad, where I was admitted for two days and charged Rs 32,000, only to hear the same diagnosis. KMC-RI remains a trustworthy option.” - A private school teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, added:
“I was quoted Rs 3.4 lakh for a cardiac ailment at private hospitals, but KMC-RI treated me for just Rs 1 lakh. I don’t mind the revised charges, as the treatment remains accessible.”
Opposition Calls for Rollback
Not everyone agrees with the price hike. Some activists and community leaders criticized the decision, especially since no prior public announcement was made.
- Shivanand Belavatagi, director of Saptagiri Heritage Nivasigala Sangh, voiced his concerns:
“Poor patients from neighboring districts are already struggling with rising bus fares, milk prices, and other essential commodities. The government should roll back the hospital charges. We will submit a letter to the government and hold a protest at KMC-RI.”
Hospital Justifies Tariff Revision
Defending the decision, Dr. S.F. Kammar, director of KMC-RI, stated:
“This is the first price revision in eight years. It is not a financial burden but rather a step towards improving quality care and providing more benefits to patients and attendees. Moreover, free treatment will continue for eligible SC/ST and BPL cardholders.”
While the hike has divided opinions, KMC-RI continues to be one of North Karnataka’s most affordable healthcare providers, balancing affordability with improved services.
